David brings a passion for and vast experience in arts engagement work to his role as Senior Affiliate for Blue Garnet. As principal of davidlorey|CONSULTING, David works with a broad array of nonprofits on organizational, program, and operational strategy and also conducts performance assessment, research, data development and analysis. David has specialized in arts organizations and he has worked with dozens of small- and mid-sized California arts organizations on capacity-building, strategic planning, fundraising, audience-development, marketing, fundraising, and board-development challenges. In addition, he has coached executive directors of many arts organizations as their organizations underwent significant change—in business models, organizational structure, brand, executive leadership, board composition, and long-term community-engagement strategy.
Previously, David served as a Program Director at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. He holds an M.A. (1986) and Ph.D. (1990) in social and economic history from UCLA; a certificate in arts management from UMass and a certificate in fundraising management from Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy. David is the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of 18 books.
